Crain's 40 under 40

Mark Seaborn, 39

Director

Pennington Consulting Ltd.

Greatest professional achievement: Started Pennington Consulting, a housing and property-related consultancy, from scratch in his spare bedroom.

Current business goal: To grow the company, soon to be renamed Pennington Choices Ltd, following recent acquisitions of other small facilities management businesses.

Seaborn started his career as an environmental health officer at Portsmouth City Council before joining specialist housing consultancy NUIRAS/Psec and then moving on to The Riverside Housing Association, one of the UK’s largest social housing landlords, in 1996.

Three years later he joined Willow Park Housing Trust in South Manchester as chief executive, where helped establish and lead a new board and management team and oversaw a £30m annual investment programme for the area, which includes the most deprived ward in Europe — Benchill in Wythenshawe.

Pennington Consulting was formed in 2000, with Seaborn initially operating as a sole trader. During the past five years he has carried out two roles at the company — operational consultant and director — to help grow the business into a fully-fledged consultancy.

Seaborn said: “What really makes me smile is the team of people I work with, many of whom have grown with the company.”
