Greatest professional achievement: Establishing Bibby Financial Services’ new factoring arm in Manchester as one of the fastest-growing in its sector in the UK.
Current business goal: To position Bibby Financial Services in Manchester as the leading independent factoring house (outside of the main clearing bank subsidiaries) in the region.
Even with the support of a large organisation like family-owned shipping firm Bibby Line, which celebrated its 200th anniversary at its Liverpool headquarters last year, building a successful factoring business in a city which already has more than its fair share of asset-based lenders and invoice discounters is no mean feat. He started the business, which is a division of £92m-turnover Bibby Financial Services, from almost nothing. Rimmer said that when he first moved into new premises at Salford Quays in 2002 from a previous post with the company in Sussex, the business had four staff and no clients.
Within five years, though, staff had grown to 33, the number of clients had grown to 330 and it was making profits of £2.25m. It quickly became the best-performing office within the Bibby Group and Rimmer was named Young Manchester director of the year at the Institute of Directors’ North West awards in 2005.
