Unicom plots growth course

Manchester-based telecom service provider Unicom, which specialises in business-to-business connections, has reported a 14.3 per cent increase in pre-tax profits and a seven per cent rise in turnover in the year to the end of April 2009.
The business, which uses use BT Openreach’s infrastructure and network, saw turnover increase to £44.5m from £41.6m, with pre-tax profits standing at £11.2m compared to £9.8m in 2008.
Chris Earle, Unicom’s operations director, said he expected turnover to reach more than £48m in 2010.
“Profits are projected to rise to well over £12m,” he added.
“We’re a relatively small business with a small, closely-knit and efficient management team – and we are absolutely clear in our minds about what makes the difference to our customers: a UK call centre with real people answering the telephone, 98 per cent of calls answered within three seconds and managers and directors who are hands-on and accessible.”
The firm, which has 75,000 customers, said its retention rate was 86 per cent against an sector average of around 70 per cent.
